How to Guide - Connecting Your Laptop to Hdtv Or Tv

I'm writing this guide after being asked a few times on ways to connect a laptop to a Tv. Population want to perform this for any reasons. First, it's great for presentations at work, school, or home. It's also favorable for viewing pictures and videos to friends, watching Dvds, and it is now even being used for viewing Blu-ray and other high definition article on the Hdtv.

First, we want to make sure you're getting the most out of your laptop when it comes to displaying it on the Tv.

Vizio Phone

• If you have an Hdtv with Hdmi inputs, check if your laptop has an Hdmi output. If it does, you're in luck! Your Hdtv can display from your laptop in Hd resolutions. All you need is an Hdmi cable to connect them. If your Hdtvs Hdmi inputs are used up already. An Hdmi switch would be the best clarification for you. We supply switches that can connect up to 5 distinct Hdmi sources to 1 Hdmi input.
• If you don't have an Hdmi production on the laptop, check if it has a Dvi output. Some Asus, and Dell laptops have them. If you do, you can connect your laptop to an Hdtv with an Hdmi to Dvi cable. They are both digital cables so this will produce the same Hd resolutions as a suitable Hdmi cable.
• If your laptop doesn't have Hdmi or Dvi out, it should have a Vga output. Connecting with Vga is capable of high resolutions. However, distinct Tvs withhold distinct resolutions with Vga. You must check the maximum resolution your Tv model supports with Vga.
• Pretty much all laptops come with an S-Video output. It's not going to be as great of a picture, but it will nothing else but do the job with an S-Video cable.

After you have connected your chosen cable, boot up your laptop and see if it has detected your Tv. If not, you have to go into your display properties and look for the settings that will enable your Tv to display from your laptop. Where to find the setting will vary depending on your graphics card (just look around). If you are having issue getting your Tv to show a picture, make sure you have updated the display drivers on your laptop. Now you're probably going to want sound from something other than your laptop speakers. So you can pick to production it to your Tv, or blast it from your home theater audio receiver.

• The best way to connect audio to your Tv or receiver is straight through a digital audio cable. Both a digital coaxial cable or Toslink optic audio cable will work great for crisp high capability audio. Just make sure your laptop has either a digital coaxial or an optic audio output. Some laptops use the headphone jack to double as a digital coaxial (S/Pdif) output. If you use this method, your going to need a 3.5mm to Rca adapter with a digital coaxial cable. If your laptop has none of these outputs and you still nothing else but want that high capability sound. Don't worry! • Another way, which won't want any add-ons, is to use the headphone (3.5mm) jack on your laptop to the Rca (red and white) inputs on your Tv or receiver. To do this, all you need is a 3.5mm to 2 Rca adapter with a 2 Rca audio cable.

- rubbing alcohol (aka isopropyl alcohol)

- distilled water (not tap water!)

- A soft cloth (lint-free)

* Steps

1. Dilute the rubbing alcohol into a mix with about 50% alcohol and the rest distilled water.

2. Pour this solution into a spray bottle. Old Windex bottles are good as they spray in a mist pattern with just the right number to get good coverage on your screen. The spray bottles that squirt a particular stream tend to drip solution all over the place.

3. Spray the mix onto a soft lint-free cloth. Old t-shirts and microfiber car wash cloths are both good choices. Large cloths are best since it helps to sacrifice the risk of leaving streaks on the screen from too much pressure.

4. Moderately wipe the cloth on the screen in a circular consistent motion. Apply even pressure to the cloth and be particular not to push too hard, or scrape the screen with your fingernails!

* Suggestions

- high-priced products that you buy at the "computer screen cleaning" aisle of your local computer store include the same basic ingredients of alcohol and water! Some even include other harmful chemicals such as ethylene glycol, which may be ok on older glass Crt monitors, but should Not be used on Lcd screens! Some of the extra chemicals can also be harmful to the environment and to your health.

- Be sure to use Mineral water! Not tap water; you don't want hard mineral spots on your screen.

- Don't use tissue paper; they will leave lint and spots of paper stuck to your monitor. Also they're too thin, risking damage from your fingernails poking through.

- Don't apply too much solution. If you do, just wipe it off with the cloth and use less.

- You can also use lint-free lens wipes from photography stores, but they're thinner so be particular about your fingernails poking through.

- For a cheap ready-made solution from the store, you can also use Cd/Dvd cleaner, It's already designed to be plastic-safe, and is a easy solution of about 50% isopropyl alcohol.

* Some Precautions

- Don't use Windex or other glass cleaners! These include ammonia, which is ok for glass, but Will hurt your Lcd screen!

- Try not to use the truly cheap paper towels, like the tough brown ones in collective washrooms. They can scratch your screen.

- Be sure to shut down your computer and your monitor, then unplug from the wall. This reduces the risk of galvanic damage in case you spill some of the solution on components.

- Don't drink isopropyl alcohol! It's toxic!

- If you aren't sure, you can test a small corner of the screen first.

720p Vs 1080i Hdtv

Is 720p vs 1080i worth being concerned about? Yes and no. If you're a consumer finding for a new Tv, you can happily ignore the 720p vs 1080i debate because every Tv which is described as Hdtv or Hdtv Ready is required to maintain both formats.

Note: You should be aware though that lots of Tvs which maintain 1080i have fewer than 1080 lines and so scale the 1080 signal down. That's not a huge issue as even scaled down 1080i is far ahead of a quarterly Ntsc signal. It is worth bearing in mind that more costly Hdtvs tend to have good scalers than economy ones, and this may be an issue.

However, for broadcasters it's a live issue. Should they broadcast 1080 lines of interlaced video or 720 lines of progressive scan? They could just broadcast two signals, one in each format, but that would use up a huge chunk of bandwidth and be hugely costly for very tiny gain.

To respond the question, it's leading to understand the incompatibility in the middle of 720p vs 1080i. A 720p signal is made up of 720 horizontal lines. Each frame is displayed in its entirety on-screen for 1/30th of a second. This is know as progressive scan (hence the 'p')The capability is like watching 30 photographic images a second on Tv. A 1080i signal comprises 1080 horizontal lines but all the lines are not displayed on-screen simultaneously. Instead, they are interlaced (hence the 'i'), ie every other lines is displayed for 1/60th of a second and then the alternate lines are displayed for 1/60th of a second. So, the frame rate is still 30 frames per second, but each frame is split into two fields, which your brain then puts together subconsciously.

Most of the time interlacing works fine, but for fast absorbing images, such as sports like baseball and hockey it can cause problems which manifest themselves as a 'stepping' supervene on-screen. Progressive scan signals don't have this question and so are good qualified to sports.

Espn puts it like this: 'Progressive scan technology produces good images for the fast absorbing orientation of sports television. Simply put, with 104 mph fastballs in baseball and 120 mph shots on goal in hockey, the line-by-line basis of progressive scan technology good captures the possible fast activity of sports. For Espn, progressive scan technology makes exquisite sense.'

Bottom line? For us, as consumers 720p vs 1080i is not a debate worth worrying about, so you can relax and focus on all the other criteria on your list when you buy your next Hdtv.
